What's Happening?
NorthStandard has released a report based on its ECDIS Training Assessment (ETA) platform, which provides insights into the proficiency of bridge teams in using Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS). The report, developed in collaboration
with the UK Hydrographic Office, draws on data from over 5,000 assessments and highlights common knowledge gaps among seafarers. Key findings include difficulties in identifying ENC updates, prioritizing correct ENC scales, and distinguishing alarms from alerts. The report aims to address these gaps through targeted training, enhancing navigational safety and situational awareness.
Why It's Important?
The findings of the NorthStandard report are crucial for the maritime industry as they underscore the need for improved ECDIS training to prevent navigational errors and enhance safety at sea. By identifying specific areas where bridge teams lack proficiency, the report provides a roadmap for targeted training initiatives. This is particularly important as the industry moves towards adopting the S-100 framework, which will require all newly installed ECDIS to be compatible by 2029. The report's insights can help shipping companies mitigate risks and improve operational efficiency, ultimately contributing to safer maritime operations.
What's Next?
Following the release of the report, NorthStandard plans to continue collaborating with the UK Hydrographic Office and other partners to enhance ECDIS training programs. This includes leveraging simulator-based training and analyzing feedback from classroom sessions to address the identified knowledge gaps. Shipping companies are encouraged to utilize the ETA platform to regularly assess and improve their crews' ECDIS proficiency. As the industry prepares for the mandatory S-100 framework, ongoing training and development will be essential to ensure compliance and maintain high safety standards.
