What's Happening?
After the 2025 season, approximately 50 players left the West Virginia football program and entered the transfer portal. While most have found new teams, a few remain without a new home as the 2026 season approaches.
Among those still searching are running back Kannon Katzer, EDGE player Keenan Eck, and cornerback BJ Hendrickson III. Katzer, a former Division II national champion, struggled with injuries and competition, limiting his playtime. Eck, considered a developmental player, primarily served on the scout team. Hendrickson joined the team late and focused on development, having no prior college football experience.
Why It's Important?
The situation highlights the challenges athletes face in the transfer portal, especially when competing for limited spots on college teams. The transfer portal has become a critical tool for players seeking better opportunities, but it also underscores the competitive nature of college sports. For West Virginia, the departure of so many players indicates significant changes within the program, potentially affecting team dynamics and performance. The remaining players in the portal must navigate a complex landscape to continue their athletic careers.
