What's Happening?
Guardian Sports, a company known for its safety innovations in sports, is focusing on improving player safety in flag football. Jake Hanson, the Chief Operating Officer of Guardian Sports, discussed the company's
efforts to ensure that flag football players receive the same level of protection as those in contact sports. The company has developed the LOOP headband, which was first introduced in 2019, to reduce the impact of incidental hits in flag football. This headband features soft-shell technology and a Versaknit sweat-wicking exterior for comfort and temperature regulation. Guardian Sports has partnered with Schutt to launch the next generation of the LOOP, which is designed for non-helmeted sports. The LOOP headband is highly rated for safety and is particularly beneficial for female athletes, allowing them to play without compromising their personal style.
Why It's Important?
The growth of flag football, especially among young athletes, highlights the need for enhanced safety measures. Guardian Sports' innovations address the risks associated with accidental contact in a sport traditionally viewed as non-contact. By providing effective protective gear, the company is helping to prevent injuries, which is crucial as the sport gains popularity. This development is significant for the sports industry as it underscores the importance of safety in all forms of athletic activity, potentially influencing other sports to adopt similar protective measures. The initiative also supports the inclusion of more female athletes in flag football, promoting gender equality in sports.
What's Next?
Guardian Sports is expected to continue its efforts in promoting safety in flag football and other non-helmeted sports. The company's partnership with Schutt may lead to further innovations in protective gear. As flag football grows, particularly in high schools, there may be increased advocacy for the sport's inclusion in more athletic programs. The Kansas City Chiefs' campaign to sanction girls' high school flag football in Kansas is an example of such efforts. The success of these initiatives could lead to broader acceptance and support for flag football, potentially influencing its inclusion in larger sporting events.
