Facial recognition technology firm Facewatch reported a significant increase in real-time offender alerts sent to retailers in 2025, with over half a million alerts issued, more than doubling the previous
year's total. The alerts, which notify retailers when known offenders enter their premises, averaged 1,415 per day, up from 693 daily in 2024. The surge in alerts reflects a growing trend of retail crime, with shoplifting incidents rising by 13% to 529,994 cases. Facewatch CEO Nick Fisher highlighted the 'industrial scale' of retail crime and the critical role of technology in addressing it. The British Independent Retailers Association (Bira) has described the situation as a 'retail crime crisis,' urging for more robust measures to combat the issue.
