What's Happening?
Hapag-Lloyd and Seaspan Corporation have successfully completed the first conversion of a vessel under their joint methanol retrofit program. The Seaspan Yangtze, a 10,100 TEU charter vessel, has been upgraded to a dual-fuel engine capable of operating
on methanol. This conversion is part of a broader initiative involving five vessels, with an estimated investment of $120 million. The retrofit aims to reduce CO2e emissions by 30,000-50,000 metric tons per vessel annually, supporting Hapag-Lloyd's sustainability strategy and commitment to decarbonizing its fleet operations by 2045.
Why It's Important?
The successful conversion of the Seaspan Yangtze represents a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint of maritime operations. By adopting methanol as a low-carbon fuel, Hapag-Lloyd is advancing its sustainability goals and contributing to more sustainable supply chains. This initiative not only supports emissions reductions but also extends the operational life of existing vessels, enhancing fuel flexibility and operational efficiency. The project underscores the importance of technical innovation and collaboration in achieving environmental targets in the shipping industry.
