What's Happening?
Petrodec has successfully completed a significant offshore decommissioning project in the UK Southern North Sea using its OBANA heavy-lift jackup vessel. This marks the first operational deployment of the OBANA, which removed the jacket and topside from
the Galahad normally unmanned installation, as well as multiple structures from the Amethyst field. The structures have been transported to a decommissioning yard in the Netherlands for dismantling. The OBANA, completed in 2025, is equipped for complex offshore removal tasks and can operate in water depths up to 65 meters. It features a 2,000-tonne crane and can handle up to 12,000 tonnes of deck load, allowing for efficient removal of multiple structures in a single campaign.
Why It's Important?
The completion of this decommissioning project highlights the increasing demand for integrated decommissioning solutions in the North Sea. As oil and gas operators accelerate the removal of end-of-life assets, vessels like the OBANA play a crucial role in ensuring these operations are conducted safely and efficiently. The successful deployment of the OBANA demonstrates the vessel's capability to handle large-scale decommissioning projects, potentially setting a new standard for the industry. This development is significant for the energy sector, as it reflects a shift towards more sustainable practices and the responsible management of offshore resources.
