What's Happening?
The Haslam Sports Group, led by Dee and Jimmy Haslam, is exploring the possibility of bringing a National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) expansion franchise to Columbus, Ohio. The group, which also owns the NFL's Cleveland Browns and MLS's Columbus Crew,
is considering this expansion alongside managing partners J.W. Johnson and Whitney Haslam Johnson, the family of Dr. Pete Edwards, and the Columbus-based insurance company Nationwide. Columbus is a strong contender for the NWSL's 18th franchise, with the city having a history of hosting successful U.S. women's national team games. The proposed team would play at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field, the current home of the Crew.
Why It's Important?
The potential expansion of the NWSL into Columbus signifies the growing interest and investment in women's sports. This move could enhance the sports landscape in Ohio, providing more opportunities for female athletes and increasing local economic activity through sports tourism. The involvement of the Haslam Sports Group, with its established presence in major sports leagues, underscores the viability and appeal of women's soccer as a profitable venture. This expansion could also inspire other cities and investors to consider similar ventures, further boosting the profile of women's sports in the U.S.
What's Next?
The NWSL is expected to continue its expansion process, with Columbus being a primary candidate for the next franchise. The Haslam Sports Group will likely engage in further discussions with the NWSL to finalize plans. If successful, the new team could begin play by 2028, aligning with the league's recent expansion timeline. The decision will depend on the league's assessment of Columbus's market potential and the readiness of the proposed ownership group.
