What's Happening?
Ivanhoe Mines has commenced the production of copper anodes at its Kamoa-Kakula smelter in Africa, marking a significant milestone for the company. The smelter, which is the largest of its kind on the continent, has a capacity of 500,000 tonnes per annum. The first anodes were produced in December 2025, shortly after the facility began its heat-up process and received its initial concentrate feed. Ivanhoe Mines plans to process 20,000 tonnes of stockpiled copper concentrate into 99.7% pure copper anodes, capitalizing on high copper prices. The ramp-up phase is expected to continue through 2026, with a steady-state production rate anticipated by the end of the year. Additionally, the smelter has produced its first batch of byproduct sulphuric
acid, with an annual production capacity of up to 700,000 tonnes, aimed at meeting local demand following Zambia's export ban.
Why It's Important?
The initiation of copper anode production at the Kamoa-Kakula smelter is a pivotal development for Ivanhoe Mines and the African mining sector. This move is expected to significantly boost the company's sales, leveraging the current high copper prices. The production of sulphuric acid as a byproduct also addresses local demand, particularly in light of Zambia's recent export restrictions. This development not only enhances Ivanhoe Mines' operational capabilities but also contributes to the regional economy by providing a reliable supply of essential materials. The investment in infrastructure, including a 60MW uninterruptible power supply and a forthcoming solar power site, underscores the company's commitment to sustainable and efficient operations.
What's Next?
As the ramp-up phase progresses, Ivanhoe Mines will focus on processing concentrates from its on-site concentrators, with any surplus being treated at the Lualaba Copper Smelter in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The company anticipates a reduction in unsold copper concentrate stocks from 37,000 tonnes to approximately 17,000 tonnes by the end of 2026. The completion of infrastructure projects, such as the solar power site, is expected to further enhance operational efficiency. The successful execution of these plans will likely position Ivanhoe Mines as a leading player in the global copper market, potentially influencing pricing and supply dynamics.
