What's Happening?
Main Beach in East Hampton Village, New York, has been ranked fifth in the annual list of the best beaches in the United States by Stephen Leatherman, known as 'Dr. Beach.' This ranking is part of a yearly evaluation conducted by Leatherman, a coastal
scientist and professor at Florida International University, who has been assessing America's beaches for 36 years. The 2026 list highlights Poipu Beach in Kauai, Hawaii, as the top beach, with Hawaii securing four spots in the top ten. Florida follows with three beaches, while South Carolina, New York, and Massachusetts each have one beach on the list. Leatherman's evaluation criteria include sand quality, wave action, presence of lifeguards, wildlife, development level, and crowding. Additional points are awarded to beaches that prohibit cigarette smoking to prevent littering.
Why It's Important?
The ranking of Main Beach as one of the top beaches in the U.S. underscores the appeal and quality of East Hampton's coastal offerings. Such recognition can boost local tourism, drawing visitors to the area and potentially increasing economic activity in the region. The inclusion of multiple Hawaiian beaches highlights the state's continued dominance in beach tourism, which is a significant contributor to its economy. The criteria used by Dr. Beach emphasize environmental and safety standards, encouraging other beaches to adopt similar practices to improve their rankings and attract more visitors.
What's Next?
With the release of the 2026 rankings, beaches that did not make the list may seek to improve their standings by enhancing their environmental and safety measures. Local governments and tourism boards might invest in better facilities, stricter regulations on smoking, and improved beach maintenance to attract more tourists and potentially earn a spot in future rankings. The recognition of Main Beach could lead to increased media attention and promotional efforts to capitalize on its newfound status.
