What's Happening?
The Columbus Crew has announced the dismissal of head coach Henrik Rydström after a disappointing start to the 2026 Major League Soccer (MLS) season. Rydström, who was appointed as the Crew's ninth full-time
head coach on December 31, 2025, managed the team for just 14 league games, achieving a record of 3 wins, 7 losses, and 4 draws. The team currently sits in 13th place in the Eastern Conference and 26th in the MLS Supporters’ Shield standings. General Manager Issa Tall cited the team's failure to capitalize on opportunities and produce expected results as reasons for the change. Laurent Courtois, who holds a U.S. Soccer Federation Pro and UEFA ‘A’ coaching license, has been named interim head coach. Courtois rejoined the Crew in January as a First Team Assistant Coach and has a history with the club, having previously served as head coach of Crew 2 and earning the MLS NEXT Pro Coach of the Year award.
Why It's Important?
The decision to relieve Rydström of his duties underscores the high expectations and competitive nature of MLS. The Crew's management is under pressure to deliver results and maintain the club's reputation as a strong contender in the league. The team's current standing, just four points outside of playoff position, suggests that a turnaround is still possible, but it requires immediate and effective leadership. The appointment of Courtois as interim head coach is significant due to his familiarity with the club and his previous success in developing talent within the organization. This move could stabilize the team and potentially lead to improved performance in the remaining 20 regular season matches.
What's Next?
With 20 MLS regular season matches remaining, the Columbus Crew aims to improve its standing and secure a playoff spot. The team will need to quickly adapt to Courtois' leadership style and strategies. The upcoming matches will be crucial in determining the team's ability to recover from its current position. Additionally, the Crew's management may explore roster adjustments to enhance team performance, especially considering the limited flexibility due to existing contracts. The team's next match in the U.S. Open Cup quarterfinals presents an immediate opportunity to assess the impact of the coaching change.
