What's Happening?
Advaya Capital, a private equity firm, has acquired Comscore's box office analytics division, Comscore Movies, for approximately $70 million in cash. The division will be renamed Rentrak, a nod to its original name before Comscore's acquisition in 2016.
Comscore Movies is a significant player in the global box office analytics space, covering about 95% of the global box office and nearly 100% of the North American box office. The acquisition aims to maintain the division's reputation as a gold standard in box office data while investing in new technologies and expanding its dataset. Chris Aronson, former head of domestic distribution at Paramount and founder of Rentrak Theatrical, will join the board of directors, alongside Arturo Guillén, former EVP and Global Managing Director of Comscore Movies.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is crucial for the theatrical industry, which is recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. By restoring the Rentrak name, Advaya Capital signals a commitment to innovation and service in box office analytics. The move is expected to enhance data collection and analytics capabilities, benefiting studios, distributors, and exhibitors in making informed decisions about release strategies and financial settlements. The investment in expanding the dataset and leveraging AI could lead to more accurate and comprehensive analytics, potentially influencing the future of theatrical releases and streaming services. This development is significant as the domestic theatrical market shows strong recovery, with projections of reaching $9.6 billion in box office sales in 2026.
What's Next?
Advaya Capital plans to focus on expanding the dataset, particularly in underpenetrated international markets, and enhancing data collection through AI. The firm aims to develop new products and services to meet the evolving needs of the theatrical ecosystem. As the market continues to recover, the integration of advanced analytics could reshape how studios and distributors approach film releases. The industry will likely watch closely to see how these changes impact the balance between theatrical releases and streaming platforms, potentially setting new standards for the future of cinema.
