What's Happening?
Fincantieri Marine Group, the U.S. subsidiary of Fincantieri, has been selected to construct the Spectre, a new class of multi-mission uncrewed surface vessel (USV) developed by Saildrone. The Spectre is a 52-meter aluminum-hulled vessel designed for
anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and other naval roles. It is Saildrone's largest and most capable platform, utilizing wind, solar, and diesel power for propulsion. The vessel features twin shaftlines with both electric and diesel engines, allowing for quiet operation at speeds up to 12 knots. When needed, two Caterpillar diesel engines provide a combined 5,000 horsepower, enabling speeds up to 27 knots while carrying a 25,000kg payload. Construction is set to begin soon in Wisconsin, with sea trials scheduled for early 2027.
