What's Happening?
Pizza Hut is reviving its popular BOOK IT! program from the 1990s, aimed at encouraging children to read during the summer months. The program, known as the Summer of Stories, allows children from Pre-K to 6th grade to earn free Personal Pan Pizzas by
reaching reading milestones. Enrollment for the program began on May 1, and it will run from June 1 to August 31. Participants will receive digital Reading Award Certificates, which can be redeemed for pizza. The initiative originally started in the mid-1980s as a response to President Ronald Reagan's literacy support calls and quickly gained popularity, involving millions of students nationwide.
Why It's Important?
The revival of the BOOK IT! program underscores the ongoing efforts to promote literacy among children in an era dominated by digital distractions. By incentivizing reading with tangible rewards, Pizza Hut aims to foster a love for books and learning in young students. This initiative also taps into nostalgia for Gen X and Millennials, who fondly remember participating in the program during their own school years. The program's return could inspire similar educational initiatives that blend learning with fun incentives, potentially impacting educational strategies and corporate social responsibility efforts.
