What's Happening?
Christie’s is set to hold its first auction in New York dedicated to Japanese anime and manga, scheduled from March 18 to 31, 2026. The auction, titled 'Anime Starts Here: Japanese Subculture Reimagines Tradition', will feature over 40 lots, including
original anime cels from Hayao Miyazaki’s 'Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind', manga drawings by Tezuka Osamu, and vintage Godzilla film posters. The sale will also include works by ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai and contemporary artist Yoshitomo Nara. The auction aims to capitalize on the growing interest in anime and manga among younger collectors and established art enthusiasts.
Why It's Important?
This auction marks a significant moment in the art market, reflecting the increasing global recognition and appreciation of anime and manga as legitimate art forms. By hosting this event in New York, Christie’s is acknowledging the cultural impact and commercial potential of these genres outside of Asia. The auction could set new benchmarks for the value of anime and manga art, attracting a wider audience and encouraging other auction houses to explore similar sales. It also highlights the evolving tastes of collectors who are increasingly interested in contemporary and subcultural art forms.
Beyond the Headlines
The auction not only showcases the artistic value of anime and manga but also situates these works within Japan’s broader artistic heritage. By including pieces from traditional artists like Hokusai, Christie’s is fostering a dialogue between contemporary subcultural art and classical Japanese visual traditions. This approach may enhance the cultural legitimacy of anime and manga, encouraging museums and galleries to feature these works in future exhibitions. The event could also inspire new collaborations between artists and institutions, further integrating anime and manga into the global art narrative.
