What's Happening?
Boliden's Somincor operations in Alejento Province, Portugal, are set to test their first battery-electric production support machine, the Normet Variomec XS 035 Crew SD. This vehicle, which recently arrived from Lisbon, is designed for small tunnel operations and
can carry up to three tons and six personnel. It features a FOPS/ROPS cabin and a full chassis suspension system. The vehicle will be used by the mine's cabling and rehabilitation team to transport materials like heavy steel cable reels and cement bags. This trial is part of Boliden Somincor's efforts to enhance efficiency and sustainability in underground logistics, aiming to reduce emissions and improve air quality.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the Normet Variomec XS represents a significant step towards sustainable mining practices. By integrating battery-electric vehicles, Boliden Somincor aims to reduce its carbon footprint and improve working conditions by eliminating polluting gas emissions in confined spaces. This move aligns with broader industry trends towards decarbonization and could set a precedent for other mining operations. The success of this trial could lead to a fleet upgrade, showcasing the potential of green technology to enhance productivity while addressing environmental concerns.
What's Next?
Following the trial, Boliden Somincor will evaluate the vehicle's performance in daily operations. If successful, this could lead to a broader adoption of battery-electric vehicles within their fleet. Additionally, the company plans to resume construction of a 49 MWp solar park, furthering its commitment to renewable energy and sustainability. These initiatives may influence other mining companies to adopt similar technologies, potentially leading to industry-wide changes in operational practices.
