What's Happening?
BMW Group has initiated a pilot project involving humanoid robots at its Leipzig plant, marking the company's first deployment of such technology in Europe. This project, in collaboration with Hexagon Robotics, will utilize Hexagon's AEON humanoid robot for
high-voltage battery assembly and component manufacturing. The Leipzig deployment follows a successful pilot at BMW's Spartanburg plant in the United States, where Figure AI's Figure 02 robot was instrumental in producing over 30,000 BMW X3 vehicles over ten months. The robot managed more than 90,000 components and completed approximately 1.2 million steps in around 1,250 operating hours. BMW has also established a Center of Competence for Physical AI in Production to consolidate expertise and evaluate technology partners under real-world production conditions.

The company will continue to evaluate the performance of these robots under real-world industrial conditions, potentially leading to broader implementation across its production facilities. The success of this pilot project could influence other manufacturers to adopt similar technologies, accelerating the shift towards automated and AI-driven production processes in the automotive industry.
