What's Happening?
Almonty Industries has successfully restarted operations at the Sangdong tungsten mine in South Korea after a 30-year hiatus. The mine, once one of the world's largest tungsten producers, was closed in the early 1990s due to a downturn in commodity prices.
The restart comes at a time of record tungsten prices, driven by its critical applications in defense and semiconductor industries. Phase 1 of the project is now operational, with a processing plant capable of treating 640,000 tonnes of ore annually, producing approximately 2,300 tonnes of tungsten concentrate. A planned Phase 2 expansion aims to double production capacity by 2027. This development is part of a broader strategy to diversify supply chains for critical minerals away from China, which currently dominates the global tungsten supply.
