What's Happening?
The New York Public Library (NYPL) has introduced its 'Big Summer Book Club' in collaboration with the Public Theater. This initiative encourages all adult New Yorkers to read a single book simultaneously over the summer. The selected book for this year
is N.K. Jemisin's 2020 urban fantasy novel, 'The City We Became.' The book is available for immediate download as an e-book and audiobook for NYPL library cardholders until Labor Day. The program includes various activities such as reading parties, book giveaways, and art and writing workshops. A notable event will be held at the Delacorte Theater on August 17, 2026, featuring performances, readings, and a conversation with N.K. Jemisin and WNYC's Alison Stewart.
Why It's Important?
The 'Big Summer Book Club' aims to foster a sense of community and shared experience among New Yorkers through literature. By selecting a single book for collective reading, the NYPL seeks to promote literacy and engagement with the arts. This initiative also highlights the importance of public libraries as cultural and educational hubs. The involvement of the Public Theater and the inclusion of events and workshops further enrich the cultural landscape of New York City, providing residents with opportunities to engage with literature and the arts in meaningful ways.
What's Next?
The program will continue throughout the summer, culminating in the event at the Delacorte Theater. Participants can look forward to engaging with the book and its themes through various activities and discussions. The success of this initiative could lead to similar programs in the future, potentially expanding to include more diverse genres and authors. The NYPL and its partners may also explore additional collaborations to enhance the cultural offerings available to the public.
