What's Happening?
Ethical non-monogamy (ENM), also known as consensual non-monogamy (CNM), is gaining traction among American singles, with 31% having explored this relationship style according to the 2024 Match Singles in America report. This marks a significant increase from 21% in 2014. ENM encompasses various relationship styles where romantic or sexual relationships with more than one person are consented to by all parties involved. The practice is distinguished from cheating by its emphasis on consent and communication. A 2025 meta-analysis of 35 studies indicates that individuals practicing ENM experience similar levels of relationship and sexual satisfaction as those in monogamous relationships. The rise in interest is attributed to the flexibility and personal
fulfillment it offers, allowing individuals to explore their sexuality and maintain independence while fostering multiple connections.
Why It's Important?
The growing interest in ethical non-monogamy reflects a shift in societal norms regarding relationships and personal fulfillment. This trend could influence how relationships are perceived and practiced in the U.S., potentially leading to broader acceptance of diverse relationship structures. The emphasis on consent and communication in ENM could also contribute to healthier relationship dynamics, reducing instances of infidelity and relationship dissatisfaction. As more people explore ENM, there may be increased demand for resources and support systems tailored to non-traditional relationship styles, impacting industries such as counseling, publishing, and online dating platforms.
