A study analyzed 150 textured haircare products labeled as 'Target Clean' at a South Los Angeles Target store, revealing significant safety concerns. Less than half of these products were listed in the Environmental Working Group's (EWG) Skin Deep database,
which assesses product safety. Many products were classified as posing moderate health hazards, with none achieving the 'EWG VERIFIED' status. The study highlights the lack of transparency in ingredient labeling, particularly concerning the use of 'fragrance' as an umbrella term, which can obscure potential risks. The findings suggest that 'clean' labeling may not always equate to safer products.
