What's Happening?
Steve Serio, a three-time U.S. gold medalist in wheelchair basketball, and Staff Sgt. Rico Roman, a three-time gold medalist in sled hockey, are visiting Philadelphia to participate in sports clinics. These events are organized in partnership with Toyota,
the 76ers, Flyers, and the Challenged Athletes Foundation. The clinics aim to promote adaptive sports and provide opportunities for individuals with disabilities to engage in athletic activities. The athletes are sharing their experiences and skills with participants, highlighting the importance of inclusivity in sports.
Why It's Important?
The visit by these Paralympians underscores the growing recognition and support for adaptive sports in the U.S. By partnering with major sports teams like the 76ers and Flyers, the initiative helps raise awareness about the capabilities and achievements of athletes with disabilities. This can lead to increased funding and resources for adaptive sports programs, encouraging more participation and fostering a more inclusive sports culture. The involvement of high-profile athletes also serves as inspiration for individuals with disabilities, showing them the possibilities within sports.
