What's Happening?
Shell has become the first operator to receive MiQ methane emissions certification across its entire Gulf of America production portfolio. This certification, which includes all 10 offshore assets, was awarded following an independent third-party audit
under MiQ's methane emissions standard. The certification reflects Shell's low methane intensity and its monitoring and mitigation programs aimed at detecting and reducing emissions. Since 2016, Shell has reduced methane emissions from its Gulf operations by 40% while increasing production by the same percentage. This achievement marks the first time MiQ has certified offshore crude oil production assets, expanding independent methane verification beyond natural gas operations.
Why It's Important?
The certification of Shell's operations in the Gulf of America is a significant step towards greater transparency in methane emissions, a critical factor in environmental sustainability. By achieving this certification, Shell sets a precedent for other operators in the industry, highlighting the importance of credible emissions data for regulatory compliance and market access. This move could influence regulatory policies and market dynamics, encouraging other companies to adopt similar standards. The reduction in methane emissions also contributes to global efforts to combat climate change, as methane is a potent greenhouse gas.
