What's Happening?
PBS Distribution has secured the rights to the first two seasons of the British detective drama 'Bergerac' for the U.S. market. This acquisition was made in collaboration with Banijay Rights, ahead of the London TV Screenings. 'Bergerac' is a modern re-imagining of the original series that aired on the BBC from 1981 to 1991. The show, set in Jersey, features Damien Molony as detective Jim Bergerac and has been produced by BlackLight TV, part of Banijay UK, and Jersey-based Westward Studios. The series has been a hit in the UK, with its first season attracting 2.4 million viewers, making it the highest-rated show on UKTV’s network in 2025. The new version of 'Bergerac' offers a character-led murder mystery that spans all six episodes of the season,
differing from the original format of a new storyline each episode.
Why It's Important?
The acquisition of 'Bergerac' by PBS Distribution highlights the growing interest in British television content in the U.S. market. This move is significant as it reflects the demand for international programming that offers unique storytelling and high production values. For PBS, this acquisition could attract a new audience segment interested in detective dramas, potentially boosting viewership and engagement. The success of 'Bergerac' in the UK suggests that it could replicate its popularity in the U.S., providing PBS with a competitive edge in the streaming landscape. Additionally, this deal underscores the importance of international collaborations in the television industry, as networks seek to diversify their content offerings to meet the evolving preferences of global audiences.
What's Next?
Following the acquisition, PBS Distribution plans to launch the first two seasons of 'Bergerac' in the U.S. later this year. The series is expected to draw significant attention from American audiences, given its successful reception in the UK. As the show gains traction, PBS may consider acquiring additional seasons or similar international content to expand its portfolio. The upcoming London TV Screenings could also present further opportunities for PBS to explore new partnerships and content acquisitions. Meanwhile, the producers of 'Bergerac' will likely continue to promote the series internationally, leveraging its success to secure more distribution deals across different markets.
