What's Happening?
Phoenix Group, a global digital infrastructure operator based in Abu Dhabi, has announced a strategic partnership with DC Max, a French data center developer, to establish an 18MW AI-ready data center in Lyon, France. This initiative marks the first deployment
of Phoenix's European Data Center Platform, which aims to exceed 1GW of AI and high-performance computing capacity across Europe and the GCC. The partnership provides Phoenix with preferential access to DC Max's development pipeline, accelerating its global AI infrastructure ambitions. The Lyon site has secured permits and grid connections, with construction set to begin in July 2026 and completion expected between late 2027 and early 2028.
Why It's Important?
This partnership is significant as it positions Phoenix Group as a key player in the rapidly growing European AI infrastructure market. The demand for AI computing power in Europe is outpacing supply, with enterprises and hyperscalers reserving capacity years in advance. By leveraging DC Max's established grid access and permitting expertise, Phoenix can expedite the development process, addressing the market's urgent needs. This move not only supports Phoenix's growth strategy but also aligns with the UAE's national AI ambitions, showcasing the country's commitment to being a leader in the global AI economy.
What's Next?
The partnership between Phoenix and DC Max is structured as a scalable development model, not just a single project. With a pipeline of over 1GW of opportunities valued at approximately $8 billion, the collaboration aims to deliver AI-ready capacity swiftly across key European markets. Further announcements regarding additional deployments and expansions are expected in 2026, as Phoenix continues to build its presence in the global digital infrastructure landscape.
