What's Happening?
Sandvik, a prominent player in the mining equipment industry, has secured a significant order for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) from Eldorado Gold, a Canada-based mining company. This order, valued
at approximately SEK 160 million, is intended for use at Eldorado Gold's Lamaque mine located in Val-d’Or, Québec. The order includes battery-electric trucks and loaders, marking a substantial expansion of Sandvik's BEV fleet at the Lamaque mine from two to twelve units. This follows a previous SEK 65 million order from Eldorado Gold in the third quarter of 2025. Deliveries of the new equipment are scheduled to commence in mid-2026 and continue into 2027. Mats Eriksson, President of the Mining business area at Sandvik, expressed pride in expanding their partnership with Eldorado Gold, emphasizing the role of BEVs in enhancing efficiency, safety, and sustainability in mining operations.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it underscores the growing trend towards sustainable mining practices, with companies increasingly adopting battery-electric technology to reduce their environmental footprint. The order from Eldorado Gold highlights the mining industry's shift towards more sustainable and efficient operations, driven by the need to meet environmental regulations and reduce carbon emissions. For Sandvik, this order not only strengthens its position in the battery-electric mining equipment market but also reinforces its commitment to supporting sustainable mining solutions. The expansion of BEVs at the Lamaque mine is expected to enhance operational efficiency and safety, potentially setting a precedent for other mining operations in North America and beyond.
What's Next?
The successful implementation of this order could lead to further adoption of battery-electric technology in the mining sector, as companies seek to align with global sustainability goals. As deliveries begin in mid-2026, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the performance and impact of these BEVs on mining operations. This could influence future procurement decisions and encourage other mining companies to invest in similar technologies. Additionally, Sandvik's continued partnership with Eldorado Gold may pave the way for further collaborations, potentially expanding the use of BEVs in other mining sites operated by Eldorado Gold.
