What's Happening?
Archwood Group, a timber manufacturer based in North Wales, has achieved its fifth consecutive Planet Mark certification, highlighting its commitment to reducing carbon emissions. Since joining the UN's Race to Zero campaign in 2021, the company has reduced
its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 73% compared to its baseline year. Key initiatives include the installation of 2,600 solar panels, which generate 40-50% of the factory's electricity, and a Power Purchase Agreement ensuring all remaining electricity is sourced from 100% verified renewable UK energy. The company also focuses on sustainable sourcing, with 98% of its timber being FSC or PEFC certified, and has reduced total waste by 40% over the last three years.
Why It's Important?
Archwood Group's achievements underscore the growing importance of sustainability in the manufacturing sector. By significantly reducing its carbon footprint, the company not only contributes to global environmental goals but also sets a benchmark for other manufacturers. The use of renewable energy and sustainable sourcing practices can lead to long-term cost savings and enhance the company's reputation among environmentally conscious consumers. This progress is crucial as industries face increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices to combat climate change.
What's Next?
Looking ahead, Archwood Group has set ambitious targets, including self-generating 100% of its renewable energy needs by 2028 and decarbonizing its HGV fleet by 2029. By 2030, the company aims to achieve a 50% reduction in total emissions, with the ultimate goal of reaching Net Zero by 2050. These targets will require continued innovation and collaboration with suppliers and partners to further reduce emissions across the supply chain.
