What's Happening?
On June 5, 2026, Salt Lake City introduced 'Piano Assemblage Ensemble,' an interactive sculpture by Utah artist Jason Manley, at Abravanel Plaza. This large-scale artwork, commissioned by the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation, The Blocks Arts
District, and Salt Lake County Arts and Culture, integrates five pianos into a cohesive structure. The sculpture is designed to be both visually engaging and interactive, allowing visitors to play one of the pianos. The instruments, sourced from various places, include a baby grand piano that inspired the sculpture's floral design. The unveiling featured a performance by Bennett Larsen, a competitor in the 2026 Bachauer International Piano Competition, who played classical pieces by Stravinsky and Rachmaninoff. The sculpture will remain on display until September 8, 2026.
Why It's Important?
The installation of 'Piano Assemblage Ensemble' highlights the intersection of visual and musical arts, enriching the cultural landscape of Salt Lake City. By providing an interactive experience, the sculpture encourages public engagement with the arts, fostering a community space where people of all ages and skill levels can explore music. This initiative not only celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Gina Bachauer International Piano Foundation but also supports local artists and cultural institutions. The project exemplifies how public art can transform urban spaces into vibrant cultural hubs, potentially boosting local tourism and community pride.
What's Next?
The sculpture will be accessible to the public throughout the summer, inviting pianists and art enthusiasts to interact with it. As the installation remains until September 8, 2026, it is expected to attract both locals and tourists, contributing to the cultural vitality of the area. The success of this project could inspire similar initiatives, promoting further collaboration between artists and cultural organizations in Salt Lake City. Stakeholders may evaluate the impact of this installation on community engagement and consider future projects that blend different art forms.
