Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable Joint Stock Limited Company (YOFC) has introduced a new type of optical fiber cable at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona. This hollow-core fiber technology is designed to transmit data faster and over longer
distances compared to traditional fiber optics. Unlike conventional fibers that use a solid glass core, the hollow-core fiber utilizes an air-filled tube, allowing light to travel faster, nearly reaching the speed of light in a vacuum. This innovation results in a 47% increase in propagation speed and approximately 31% lower latency. YOFC has already implemented this technology in over 10 commercial networks, including a securities trading link between Shenzhen and Hong Kong, achieving a round-trip latency of under 1 millisecond. The company is also targeting submarine cable networks, where the technology could reduce the need for amplifiers, thus lowering installation costs.
