What's Happening?
Adanya Collins, a junior linguistics major at Hofstra University, is actively involved in leadership roles aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion on campus. As the president of Hofstra's Queer and Trans
People of Color Coalition (QTPOCC), Collins works to create events and ensure that resources for the LGBTQ+ community are accessible. Her leadership extends to being a study abroad ambassador, where she helps students navigate the study abroad process, particularly encouraging Black students to explore opportunities beyond Europe. Collins also serves as the financial secretary for the Kappa Phi chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., focusing on social justice issues.
Why It's Important?
Collins' efforts highlight the importance of representation and support for minority students in predominantly white institutions. By leading identity-based clubs and initiatives, she provides a platform for students of color to feel seen and heard, fostering a more inclusive campus environment. Her work in promoting study abroad opportunities for Black students addresses the underrepresentation in global education experiences, encouraging a broader cultural exchange. Collins' leadership not only impacts current students but also sets a precedent for future student leaders to advocate for diversity and inclusion.

Collins plans to continue her work in creating safe spaces and advocating for minority students at Hofstra. Her ongoing efforts aim to increase the visibility and recognition of QTPOCC and other identity-based organizations on campus. As a study abroad ambassador, she will keep encouraging students to explore diverse study abroad destinations. Collins' leadership roles are expected to inspire more students of color to take on leadership positions, contributing to a more diverse and inclusive campus culture.
