What's Happening?
Disney has embarked on a project to reanimate three of its popular songs using American Sign Language (ASL) to enhance accessibility for deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences. The songs include 'We Don’t Talk About Bruno' from Encanto, 'The Next Right Thing'
from Frozen 2, and 'Beyond' from Moana 2. Over twenty animators collaborated with artistic director DJ Kurs and performers from Deaf West Theatre to reimagine the lyrics in ASL, focusing on concepts and emotions rather than direct translations. The Songs in Sign Language collection will debut on Disney+ on April 27, offering a new way for audiences to experience these beloved songs.
Why It's Important?
This initiative by Disney represents a significant step towards inclusivity in entertainment, providing deaf and hard-of-hearing audiences with access to popular cultural content. By reanimating songs in ASL, Disney not only broadens its audience reach but also sets a precedent for other media companies to consider accessibility in their productions. This project highlights the importance of representation and accessibility in the arts, potentially inspiring similar efforts across the industry.
