What's Happening?
As Generation X approaches retirement age, a significant portion lacks estate planning documents, according to a report by Trust & Will. The report reveals that 62% of Gen Xers have not prepared wills, trusts, or powers of attorney. This generation is less
likely than others to have completed estate plans, partly due to a shortage of estate-planning attorneys. The COVID-19 pandemic initially spurred interest in estate planning, but the trend has since declined. Gen Xers often prefer traditional attorney services, unlike younger generations who use online tools.
Why It's Important?
The lack of estate planning among Gen Xers poses risks for their financial security and asset distribution. Without proper documents, their estates may face lengthy probate processes, potentially leading to disputes among heirs. The shortage of estate-planning attorneys exacerbates the issue, highlighting the need for accessible and affordable planning options. As a significant wealth transfer looms, addressing these gaps is crucial for ensuring smooth intergenerational asset transitions and protecting family legacies.
