What's Happening?
Amazon has announced a significant acquisition of satellite specialist Globalstar for approximately $11.6 billion, or $90 per share. This strategic move is aimed at expanding Amazon's Leo satellite platform into the direct-to-device (D2D) market, enhancing
its low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite capabilities. The acquisition will also provide Amazon with access to a key client, Apple, and help it compete with SpaceX's Starlink. Amazon Leo plans to launch a D2D system by 2028, which will offer advanced voice, text, and data services to areas lacking terrestrial wireless networks. The deal includes Globalstar's existing satellite operations and spectrum licenses, making Globalstar a subsidiary of Amazon. This acquisition is expected to close in 2027, subject to regulatory approvals.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition positions Amazon as a formidable competitor in the satellite internet market, directly challenging SpaceX's Starlink. By integrating Globalstar's assets, Amazon can accelerate its satellite deployment and service offerings, potentially reaching millions of customers worldwide. The deal also strengthens Amazon's relationship with Apple, as Amazon Leo will become the primary service provider for Apple's satellite services, including emergency SOS capabilities for iPhones and Apple Watches. This move could significantly impact the satellite communications industry, offering enhanced connectivity solutions and potentially driving down costs for consumers.
What's Next?
Following the acquisition, Amazon will focus on integrating Globalstar's operations and assets into its Leo platform. The company plans to continue deploying its LEO satellites, with a target of launching commercial services by mid-2026. Amazon has requested a 24-month extension from the FCC for deploying its first 1,618 satellites. The company will also work on developing its D2D system, slated for a 2028 launch. Regulatory approvals are pending, and the deal's completion will depend on obtaining necessary antitrust and foreign investment clearances.
