What's Happening?
TOYO Co., Ltd. has announced plans to build a 1.5 GW heterojunction (HJT) solar cell manufacturing facility in the Houston metropolitan area. This expansion is part of TOYO's strategy to enhance its U.S. manufacturing platform, co-locating the new facility with
its existing solar module site. The project represents a $357 million investment and is expected to create approximately 400 direct manufacturing jobs. The facility will produce high-efficiency HJT cells, aiming to optimize supply chain insulation and capital efficiency.
Why It's Important?
TOYO's expansion into U.S. cell manufacturing aligns with the broader trend of reshoring production to meet domestic content requirements and strengthen supply chain security. The new facility will support the U.S. utility-scale solar market, benefiting from production tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act. By producing solar cells domestically, TOYO positions itself as a competitive partner in the renewable energy sector, potentially driving advancements in solar technology and contributing to American energy independence.
What's Next?
The facility's construction is expected to be completed within 20 months, with initial pilot production to follow. TOYO plans to fund the expansion through a combination of internal cash flow, project financing, and strategic partnerships. The company aims to leverage its existing infrastructure to streamline development and reduce costs. As the project progresses, TOYO will focus on compliance with local regulations and workforce development, prioritizing local hiring to support the Houston community.
