What's Happening?
Studio Ghibli's beloved films 'Whisper of the Heart' and 'The Secret World of Arrietty' are set for a special Imax re-release across North America. Gkids, in collaboration with Imax, announced that newly restored 4K editions of these films will be screened
exclusively in Imax theaters in the U.S. and Canada. 'Whisper of the Heart' will be available on April 21, while 'The Secret World of Arrietty' will follow on May 19. Both films will be offered in subtitled Japanese-language and English-dub versions. This initiative follows the successful Imax re-release of 'Princess Mononoke,' which grossed $6.9 million domestically. The remastering of these films is overseen by Studio Ghibli cinematographer Atsushi Okui. Gkids, which handles North American distribution for Studio Ghibli's library, continues to expand its offerings under new ownership by Toho Co., including the release of live-action Japanese films.
Why It's Important?
The re-release of these Studio Ghibli classics in Imax format highlights the enduring popularity and cultural significance of the studio's films in North America. By offering these films in high-quality 4K Imax, Gkids is not only catering to long-time fans but also introducing these iconic stories to new audiences. This move is part of a broader strategy by Gkids to expand its distribution capabilities under Toho Co.'s ownership, which could lead to increased visibility and appreciation for Japanese cinema in the U.S. market. The success of these re-releases could encourage other distributors to consider similar strategies for classic films, potentially revitalizing interest in older cinematic works.
What's Next?
Following the Imax re-releases, Gkids is likely to continue its strategy of bringing Studio Ghibli's films to wider audiences through various platforms. The company may also explore additional collaborations with Imax and other distributors to further enhance the reach of Japanese cinema in North America. As Gkids expands its slate to include live-action Japanese films, audiences can expect a more diverse range of offerings in the coming years. The success of these initiatives could influence other film distributors to adopt similar approaches, potentially leading to a broader acceptance and integration of international films in the U.S. market.
