What's Happening?
Econet InfraCo, the infrastructure arm of Econet Wireless Zimbabwe, has announced plans to develop a 300-hectare industrial park near Robert Mugabe International Airport in Harare. The project will include
a 100MW solar power plant and a large data center, aiming to create a modern industrial and logistics hub that leverages proximity to the airport for manufacturing, processing, and export-oriented businesses. The development will be rolled out in phases according to demand, with work on the first phase already underway. This initiative is part of several major projects approved by Econet Group founder Strive Masiyiwa.
Why It's Important?
The industrial park represents a significant investment in Zimbabwe's infrastructure, potentially boosting the local economy by attracting manufacturing and export-oriented businesses. It aligns with global trends towards sustainable energy solutions, as evidenced by the inclusion of a solar power plant. The project could create numerous jobs and stimulate economic growth in the region, enhancing Zimbabwe's appeal as a destination for international investors. The development also reflects Econet's strategic focus on expanding its infrastructure capabilities, which may influence similar initiatives across Africa.
