What's Happening?
Leonardo, an Italian aerospace and defense company, has finalized its acquisition of Iveco Group's Defence Business for €1.6 billion ($1.8 billion). This acquisition includes the IDV and ASTRA brands, which were previously part of the Iveco Group. The
deal, initially signed in July of the previous year, was valued at an enterprise value of €1.7 billion, with the final price adjusted according to contractual terms. The newly acquired entity, now under the IDV Group, reported revenues of €1.37 billion in 2025 and operates six manufacturing sites across Italy, Germany, Romania, and Brazil. It employs approximately 2,000 staff and maintains 12 commercial offices in Europe, the US, and Brazil. The acquisition allows Leonardo to expand its defense and security offerings by integrating its electronic systems with IDV's vehicle platforms, providing comprehensive operational solutions.
Why It's Important?
This acquisition is significant as it strengthens Leonardo's position in the land defense sector, enhancing its competitiveness in a market with substantial long-term growth potential. By acquiring IDV Group, Leonardo gains industrial capabilities to deliver fully integrated platforms, which include both mobility and payload solutions. This move aligns with Leonardo's inorganic growth strategy, a key component of its Industrial Plan. The acquisition not only broadens Leonardo's product range but also positions the company as a leading player in the defense industry, capable of offering end-to-end solutions that meet the evolving needs of military clients worldwide.
What's Next?
Following the acquisition, Leonardo plans to integrate its advanced electronic systems, such as command-and-control, electro-optics, and turrets, with IDV's vehicle platforms. This integration aims to deliver high-performance solutions to military clients. The company is likely to focus on leveraging the combined capabilities to capture new market opportunities and expand its footprint in the global defense sector. Stakeholders, including military clients and industry partners, will be closely monitoring how Leonardo capitalizes on this acquisition to enhance its product offerings and market reach.
