What's Happening?
Students from the University of Winchester's Faculty of Business and Digital Technology have successfully helped author Tom Spencer increase his social media reach by 246 percent. Through the university's Consultancy Club, students provided tailored recommendations
to improve Spencer's online presence. The club, launched by Julia Osgerby and Dr. Claire Ancient, aims to engage students in integrated projects. Spencer, who lacks a major publisher, benefited from the students' strategies to market himself and his books more effectively. The students focused on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and LinkedIn, offering coaching on content creation and video editing.
Why It's Important?
This initiative highlights the practical benefits of interdisciplinary collaboration in higher education, providing students with real-world experience while supporting local authors and businesses. The Consultancy Club's success demonstrates the potential for academic institutions to play a significant role in community engagement and economic development. By equipping students with skills in digital marketing and social media strategy, the program enhances their employability and prepares them for future careers. Authors and small businesses can gain valuable insights and support, potentially leading to increased visibility and sales in a competitive market.
What's Next?
Following the successful pilot, the Consultancy Club plans to continue its operations, offering support to more organizations and individuals. Interested parties can contact Julia Osgerby for collaboration opportunities. The ongoing success of the club could inspire similar initiatives at other universities, fostering a culture of collaboration between academia and industry. As more students participate, the program may expand its scope, potentially including more diverse projects and clients, further enhancing its impact on students' education and community development.
