What's Happening?
Farmers Rising, an organization dedicated to supporting local, sustainable farming, is hosting tech-free summer camps for children aged 7 to 15 in Boone County. These camps provide a hands-on experience where campers engage in farm chores, cook with harvested
food, and participate in outdoor activities like fire starting and herbalism classes. The camp aims to connect children with the food they eat and foster a love for vegetables and gardening. The program is designed to build confidence and encourage children to explore and take risks in a natural setting.
Why It's Important?
The tech-free farm camp represents a growing trend towards experiential learning and outdoor education, offering children a break from technology and a chance to engage with nature. This approach can have significant benefits for child development, including improved physical health, increased confidence, and a deeper understanding of sustainable practices. By fostering a connection to food sources and promoting environmental stewardship, the camp also contributes to broader societal goals of sustainability and healthy living.
What's Next?
The camp will continue to run through early August, with spaces still available for interested participants. Scholarships are offered to ensure accessibility for all children, regardless of financial background. As the camp progresses, it may inspire similar programs in other regions, promoting the benefits of tech-free, nature-based education across the country.
