What's Happening?
The New Museum in New York City is unveiling a significant expansion with the addition of a new 60,000 square foot building, effectively doubling its size to 120,000 square feet. Designed by Shohei Shigematsu and Rem Koolhaas of OMA, in collaboration
with Cooper Robertson, the expansion aims to enhance the museum's capacity for exhibitions and artist studios. The new structure features a glass and metal facade, a central atrium, and a public plaza. It includes a new artist-in-residence studio and a permanent home for New Inc, the museum's art and technology incubator. The expansion allows for more complex exhibitions, such as the opening show 'New Humans: Memories of the Future,' which explores the impact of technology and society on humanity. The museum will offer free public entry during its opening weekend and pay-what-you-wish hours on Thursday evenings.
Why It's Important?
The expansion of the New Museum is a significant development in the art world, particularly in New York City, a major cultural hub. By doubling its exhibition space, the museum can host larger and more diverse exhibitions, supporting both emerging and established artists. This expansion also strengthens the museum's role as an incubator for new ideas and art forms, particularly through its New Inc program, which has supported over 730 alumni. The increased capacity for artist residencies and exhibitions can attract more visitors, boosting local tourism and the economy. Additionally, the museum's focus on contemporary issues, such as the intersection of technology and society, positions it as a relevant and forward-thinking institution.
What's Next?
Following the expansion, the New Museum plans to continue its role as a leading contemporary art institution by hosting a variety of exhibitions and programs. The museum's director, Lisa Phillips, will step down next month, marking a leadership transition that could influence future directions. The museum will maintain its commitment to accessibility with free and pay-what-you-wish entry options, potentially increasing public engagement. The expansion also sets the stage for future collaborations with artists and institutions, further solidifying its position in the global art community.
