What's Happening?
Carlos and Juan Vergara, the father-and-son team behind Barroco Grill, have decided to close several of their restaurant locations, including Barroco Grill in Lakewood and Westlake, and Hola Tacos in Lakewood, which will be on hiatus until spring. The decision is not due to a lack of business but rather a strategic move to step back due to family health considerations. The original Barroco Grill in Lakewood, which started as a small 12-seat café in 2011, had grown significantly over the years, expanding to multiple locations and becoming a popular spot for Colombian street food. Despite the closures, the Vergaras express pride in their accomplishments and the growth they have achieved over the past 15 years.
Why It's Important?
The closure of these popular dining
spots highlights the challenges faced by family-run businesses in balancing personal health and business demands. The decision underscores the importance of prioritizing family well-being over business expansion, even when the business is thriving. This move may impact local economies, particularly in Lakewood and Westlake, where these restaurants have been significant contributors to the dining scene. The closures also reflect a broader trend in the restaurant industry where operators are reevaluating their business models post-pandemic, focusing on sustainability and personal health.
What's Next?
While the Barroco locations in Lakewood and Crocker Park will remain closed, the Larchmere location will stay open due to a unique arrangement with La Pecora Pizzabar. Amazonia, another concept by the Vergaras, will also continue operations. The family plans to transition these businesses to other capable operators in the coming months, ensuring that the legacy of their culinary ventures continues. This transition may bring new opportunities for local entrepreneurs and could lead to a revitalization of these dining spaces under new management.
