What's Happening?
California Street Farm, located in northeast Minneapolis, is a small urban farm owned and operated by queer sisters. The farm, which produces a variety of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers, serves as both a source of fresh produce and a representation of LGBTQ+ presence in urban agriculture. Managed by Elyssa Eull since 2022, the farm emphasizes community-based, small-scale vegetable production and sustainability. It operates on land leased from the California Building and sells produce at local markets and through a CSA program.
Why It's Important?
California Street Farm highlights the intersection of urban agriculture and LGBTQ+ representation, offering a model for inclusive and sustainable farming practices. The farm's focus on community engagement and accessibility,
including accepting EBT and offering a sliding-scale CSA, addresses food security and affordability. By fostering a supportive environment for queer farmers, the farm contributes to diversifying the agricultural sector, traditionally dominated by older, male farmers. This initiative not only supports local food systems but also strengthens community ties and promotes environmental stewardship.
What's Next?
California Street Farm plans to host a farm-to-table dinner in late May, marking the first public event of the season. The farm will also participate in the Northeast Minneapolis Farmers Market starting mid-May. These events aim to further engage the community and promote the farm's mission of sustainable and inclusive agriculture. As the farm continues to grow, it may inspire similar initiatives in other urban areas, contributing to a broader movement towards sustainable and community-focused farming practices.
