What's Happening?
The Seattle Kraken, in collaboration with the City of Kirkland, has announced the groundbreaking of the Kraken Iceplex, Kirkland and Community Center, scheduled to open in the fall of 2027. This new facility
will feature two ice rinks and serve as a hub for community activities, aiming to increase participation in ice sports and physical activities. The project, which began discussions in late 2023, is designed to provide a state-of-the-art community center without imposing new taxes on residents. The facility will offer a variety of programs, including learn-to-skate and learn-to-play-hockey classes, recreational leagues, and public skating sessions. It will also host youth engagement activities, such as field trips and STEM sessions, and provide financial support for lower-income families to participate in ongoing programs.
Why It's Important?
The development of the Kraken Iceplex and Community Center is significant for several reasons. It is expected to generate approximately $7 million in annual economic activity for Kirkland and the surrounding Eastside area, supporting local jobs and businesses. The facility will enhance community engagement by providing a venue for local events and activities, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Additionally, it will strengthen the bond between the Seattle Kraken and the Eastside community, promoting the growth of ice sports and offering new opportunities for youth and adults to engage in physical activities. The project aligns with Kirkland's long-term vision for a vibrant, walkable, and transit-friendly district, potentially catalyzing future growth in the area.
What's Next?
As the project progresses, the focus will be on the construction and development of the facility, with an anticipated opening in the fall of 2027. The Seattle Kraken and the City of Kirkland will continue to collaborate on programming and community engagement initiatives to ensure the facility meets the needs of the local population. Stakeholders, including local businesses and schools, are likely to play a role in shaping the offerings and activities at the Iceplex. The project may also inspire similar developments in other communities, highlighting the potential for sports and recreation facilities to drive economic and social benefits.
