What's Happening?
Project Pride SRQ and Senior Friendship Centers are collaborating to host Silver Pride 2026, a free event celebrating LGBTQ+ community members aged 50 and above. Scheduled for June 6 at the Senior Friendship Centers in Sarasota, the event will feature
live entertainment, food, and information on resources for senior-related services and LGBTQ+ support. The event aims to ensure that LGBTQ+ older adults feel seen, valued, and connected to the community. It will include performances by local artists and a panel discussion titled 'Aging Out Loud: LGBTQ+ Life, Legacy, and Belonging Across Generations.'
Why It's Important?
Silver Pride 2026 highlights the unique challenges and contributions of LGBTQ+ seniors, a group often overlooked in broader LGBTQ+ advocacy. By focusing on older adults, the event addresses issues of visibility, inclusion, and support for a demographic that may face additional barriers due to age and sexual orientation. Celebrating LGBTQ+ seniors helps to foster a sense of belonging and community, ensuring that they are recognized as integral members of society. This event also underscores the importance of intergenerational dialogue and support within the LGBTQ+ community.
