What's Happening?
Mainely Gay, Maine's first queer magazine, has been reprinted for a final issue to commemorate the history of LGBTQ+ activism in the state. Originally launched in 1974 as the Maine Gay Task Force Newsletter, it became a magazine in 1977 and ceased publication
in 1980. The final issue is being distributed for free at the Pride Portland celebration and will be discussed at a panel at the University of Southern Maine. The magazine played a significant role in connecting LGBTQ+ communities across Maine, providing a platform for activism and information sharing during a time when such resources were scarce.
Why It's Important?
The reprinting of Mainely Gay highlights the historical significance of LGBTQ+ activism in Maine and serves as a reminder of the progress made over the decades. It underscores the importance of preserving and celebrating the history of marginalized communities, offering inspiration for current and future activists. The magazine's revival also reflects ongoing efforts to educate younger generations about past struggles and achievements in the fight for equality, fostering a sense of continuity and community within the LGBTQ+ movement.
What's Next?
The final issue of Mainely Gay will be available at Pride Portland, and a panel discussion will be held to explore the magazine's impact and legacy. This event may inspire renewed interest in LGBTQ+ history and activism in Maine, potentially leading to new initiatives or publications that continue the work started by Mainely Gay. The commemorative issue aims to encourage younger activists to draw lessons from past efforts and to continue advocating for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility.
