What's Happening?
A recent analysis by music experts at Fanatix has identified certain popular Christmas songs that may cause stress to pets. The study, which utilized findings from the BBC and the Natural Library of Medicine, concluded that high-tempo songs with significant percussive elements are more likely to irritate pets. Fanatix examined 90 popular Christmas songs from Spotify's Christmas Hits playlist and highlighted the top 10 most stressful tunes for pets. Wham's 'Last Christmas' topped the list with a beats per minute (BPM) of 206, followed by Shakin' Stevens' 'Merry Christmas Everyone' and The Andrews Sisters' 'Mele Kalikimaka (Merry Christmas)', both at 203 BPM. In contrast, Fanatix recommended a list of pet-friendly Christmas songs with slower tempos,
such as John Williams' 'Carol of the Bells' from the 'Home Alone' soundtrack, which has a BPM of 47.
Why It's Important?
The findings of this study are significant for pet owners who wish to create a more comfortable environment for their animals during the holiday season. High-tempo music can increase anxiety levels in pets, potentially leading to behavioral issues. By identifying and avoiding these stress-inducing songs, pet owners can help ensure their pets remain calm and happy. This research also highlights the broader impact of music on animal behavior, encouraging further exploration into how different types of music affect pets. The study's recommendations provide practical guidance for pet owners looking to adjust their holiday playlists to better suit their furry companions.
What's Next?
Pet owners may consider revising their holiday playlists to include more of the recommended pet-friendly songs. This adjustment could lead to a more harmonious holiday season for both pets and their owners. Additionally, the study may prompt further research into the effects of music on animals, potentially influencing how music is used in animal care settings. As awareness of the impact of music on pets grows, there may be increased demand for curated playlists specifically designed to cater to the needs of animals.
