What's Happening?
Sake Noire, a bar in Seattle dedicated to sake and shochu, has been hosting a series of pop-up events called Jazz x Sake since January 2024. These events combine the art of jazz music with the cultural richness of sake, creating a unique experience that
has gained popularity in the local community. The idea was conceived by Quan Liang, a sake specialist, and Jun Iida, a Japanese-American jazz musician, who met in 2018 and sought to merge their passions. The events feature performances by Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander (AANHPI) musicians and offer a curated selection of sake, aiming to demystify and celebrate these traditions. The events have been described as intimate and community-focused, drawing inspiration from Japanese jazz vinyl listening bars known as kissa.
Why It's Important?
The Jazz x Sake events highlight the cultural fusion between Japanese and American traditions, fostering a sense of community and appreciation for diversity. By featuring AANHPI musicians and emphasizing the craftsmanship involved in both jazz and sake, these events promote cultural understanding and inclusivity. They also provide a platform for BIPOC and female jazz musicians, contributing to diversity in the arts. The events have reignited interest in jazz among attendees and strengthened community ties, showcasing the power of cultural events to bring people together and celebrate shared heritage.
What's Next?
Jazz x Sake is set to host a special AANHPI show on May 30, focusing on the sounds of Asian cinema, before Sake Noire opens a permanent space in Hillman City this summer. This new venue will continue to offer live jazz performances, aiming to replicate the hidden jazz bar experience found in Japan. The expansion of Sake Noire's offerings suggests a growing interest in cultural events that blend music and culinary arts, potentially inspiring similar initiatives in other communities.
