Roblox, a popular online gaming platform, is introducing mandatory age-gated account tiers to enhance child safety. Starting mid-May, the platform will categorize its users into three age-specific groups: Kids (5-8), Select (9-15), and standard (16+).
This structural change follows lawsuits from eight U.S. state attorneys general over child safety issues. The new system builds on a facial age verification process introduced in January, which has faced criticism for its effectiveness. Developers are required to verify their identity and pay a monthly fee to have their content appear in younger tiers. Despite these measures, the system's credibility is questioned as age-verified accounts have been found for sale online, and the facial scans can reportedly be bypassed.
