What's Happening?
A successful trial of a battery-electric haul truck has been completed at the Kansanshi copper and gold mine in Zambia. Conducted by First Quantum Minerals and Hitachi Construction Machinery, the trial involved a full-battery dump truck operating with
overhead trolley lines. Over the course of the trial, the truck traveled more than 4,000 kilometers and hauled over 30,000 tonnes of material. The vehicle, based on the EH4000 platform, demonstrated improved acceleration and reduced noise, with zero CO2 emissions due to Zambia's hydropower-based electricity system. The trial's success supports plans for commercial deployment in 2027.
