What's Happening?
Fairtrade International, established in 1997, is a non-profit organization that coordinates activities for its 22 member organizations, including three producer networks and 19 national Fairtrade organizations.
The organization is responsible for the FAIRTRADE Mark, a trademark that appears on over 30,000 products worldwide. Fairtrade International's central office in Bonn, Germany, employs about 90 staff members. The organization ensures that all system members and certified producer organizations participate in decision-making through representatives on the Board of Directors and the Fairtrade General Assembly.
Why It's Important?
Fairtrade International plays a significant role in promoting ethical trade practices and supporting sustainable development. By ensuring fair prices and better working conditions for farmers and workers in developing countries, Fairtrade helps reduce poverty and improve livelihoods. The organization's efforts contribute to raising awareness about the importance of ethical consumerism and the impact of purchasing decisions on global supply chains. As consumers increasingly demand transparency and sustainability, Fairtrade's influence on market trends and corporate practices continues to grow.
