What's Happening?
The Zero Carbon Forum, comprising over 70 businesses in the UK hospitality sector, has successfully halved electricity-related emissions from 2020 to 2025. This achievement was made possible through enhanced
energy efficiency, staff behavior change programs, and increased procurement of renewable electricity. The forum's members, including major brands like Nando's and Pizza Express, have collectively avoided £5.2 million in additional energy costs. The forum has set a 2030 net-zero target for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, with a focus on improving energy efficiency and sourcing renewables. Despite progress, the forum faces challenges in reducing Scope 3 emissions, which include supply chain and indirect emissions.
Why It's Important?
The success of the Zero Carbon Forum demonstrates the potential for significant carbon reductions in the hospitality sector through collaborative efforts. By achieving substantial emissions cuts, the forum sets a precedent for other industries to follow. The financial savings achieved highlight the economic benefits of sustainable practices, which can be a compelling incentive for businesses to adopt similar measures. The forum's approach could serve as a model for other sectors aiming to reduce their carbon footprint, contributing to broader climate goals and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.
